Snakes are common all over Australia, including throughout the Shire of Ravensthorpe.
They play an important role in the wildlife ecosystem and are protected under both State and Commonwealth legislation.
Snakes will tend to move around more as the weather warms up, which is why they are spotted more frequently in early Spring.
Common snake species in the region
In the Shire of Ravensthorpe and surrounding areas, some of the most commonly encountered snakes include:
-
Dugite (Pseudonaja affinis) – A highly venomous snake often found in coastal areas, open bushland, and sometimes near homes. Dugites are shy and tend to avoid confrontation, but they can become defensive if cornered.
-
Western brown snake (Pseudonaja nuchalis) – Another venomous species that is known to inhabit more arid and open spaces. Although less commonly encountered, they can be aggressive when threatened.
-
Carpet python (Morelia spilota) – A non-venomous snake that is quite common in bushland and occasionally in residential gardens. They pose no threat to humans but are excellent at keeping rodent populations under control.
-
Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) – Often found near water sources, such as creeks and wetlands, tiger snakes are highly venomous and can be found in cooler months as well. They are more active during the warmer parts of the day.

Does the Shire remove snakes?
Our rangers are experienced in handling and removing snakes, but they can only assist in locating and removing snakes from Shire properties.
If you see a snake on any Shire property, please contact us on 08 9839 0000.
It is important that you keep an eye on the snake so you can direct the rangers when they arrive.
For private property you will need to contact a commercial or volunteer snake catcher.
In Hopetoun there is a group of volunteers who can assist with snakes found on your property in and around Hopetoun, but only if you can still see the snake or it is isolated in a room.
The best way to contact them is via their Hopetoun Snake Relocation Volunteers Facebook page.
At this stage there are not similar groups available in Ravensthorpe or Munglinup.
