At the Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 30 July 2024 the Shire of Ravensthorpe 2024/2025 Budget was adopted.

Council carefully considered and approved a rate increase of 4.50%, which is a reduction from last year’s 4.75%. This adjustment has been made across general categories to ensure a balanced approach to the region's financial needs.

The Budget addresses the economic challenges faced by the community due to the downgrade in operations at Ravensthorpe Nickel Operations. The immediate impact has been observed in the reduction of airport passenger numbers and childcare places, resulting in a budget revenue shortfall of $1,340,000 from these two sectors alone.

Key projects and works to improve community assets

To counter these economic effects and enhance the quality of life in the region, the Budget includes funding for various consultancy works aimed at exploring potential projects and reviewing key community assets. The consultancy plans for 2024/2025 include:

• Review of boat ramps: Assessing the current state and potential improvements for boat ramps
• Coastal and Foreshore Precinct Master Plan: Developing a comprehensive plan for coastal and foreshore areas
• Culham Inlet Management Plan Review: Evaluating and updating the management plan for Culham Inlet
• Bike Park Facility Feasibility Study: Investigating the feasibility of a dedicated bike park
• Ravensthorpe Botanical Garden Feasibility Study: Exploring the potential for establishing a botanical garden in Ravensthorpe.

The Capital Works Program for this year amounts to $5,418,000, with priority projects including:

• Resurfacing Birdwood Street in Hopetoun
• Upgrading footpaths in Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun
• Extending the coastal walking track from One Mile to Two Mile in Hopetoun

Future planning vital for Council

Shire President Tom Major acknowledged it has been a tough year for the community and said this year’s budget is aimed at planning for the future.

“We know things have been difficult and Council has looked very closely at our options,” he said.

“There is a rate rise, but it is lower than last year’s and we’ve put significant effort into looking at ways to improve our most popular community assets.”
