Council endorses switching WALGA zone

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 18 June 2024 Council endorsed the Shire of Ravensthorpe applying for membership to the Western Australia Local Government Association (WALGA) Great Southern Country zone.

WALGA is an independent, member based, not for profit organisation that represents and supports the local government sector within Western Australia.

The Shire of Ravensthorpe is currently an ordinary member of the WALGA Goldfields Esperance Country zone and up until 2020 was a member of the Goldfields Voluntary Regional Organisation of Councils (GVROC).

While Ravensthorpe shares similar industries with the Central Country (in particular broadacre farming), our coastal assets align more with a number of the LGAs (Jerramungup, Albany, Denmark) within the Great Southern zone.

As Ravensthorpe is already a member of the Great Southern Regional Roads Group there is also existing commonality with the Great Southern Country zone.

Shire of Ravensthorpe Chief Executive Officer Matthew Bird said by changing zones, there is potential for more advocacy on key community issues.

“WALGA is the peak advocacy group for the local government sector and Ravensthorpe has not been an active member of any WALGA zone group since mid-2020," he said.

"We are potentially missing out on providing our input into a wide range of advocacy issues, such as infrastructure, housing, health and industry specific topics such as drought resilience.”

The motion was approved 6/0.
