Arcadium Lithium has informed the Shire of Ravensthorpe that it plans to wind down operations at the Mt Cattlin site due to the continued decline in lithium prices. The site is expected to be transitioned into care and maintenance during the first half of 2025.
This announcement comes on the heels of a similar decision by First Quantum Minerals, which placed the Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation (RNO) into care and maintenance earlier this year. The effects from that closure have been felt throughout Hopetoun, and today’s news is expected to bring further challenges.
Shire President Tom Major said the closure of Mt Cattlin will have a ripple effect across the region.
“Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by this announcement and unfortunately in our small community that is going to be a lot of people,” he said.
“It’s not just direct employees but also local businesses, schools and clubs, that will likely feel the impact, with many already reeling from the earlier closure of RNO.”

What is next?
This news highlights the importance of a central theme that emerged during community consultations earlier this year as part of the Strategic Community Plan review: the urgent need to diversify our local economy and reduce our dependence on a single major sector.
The Shire of Ravensthorpe is working closely with the Western Australian Government to explore ways to enhance existing tourism infrastructure and develop new attractions that showcase the area's natural wonders, such as the Fitzgerald River National Park and its rich biodiversity.
