Rod Daw has resigned as Chief Bush Fire Control Officer (CBFCO) for the Shire of Ravensthorpe after 50 years of service.

His knowledge and experience have been vital in keeping our communities safe, and ensuring our region is prepared against the ever-present threat of bushfires.

While stepping down from his official duties, Rod’s expertise will continue to be valued in an advisory capacity, allowing the Shire to benefit from his experience.

Shire President Cr Tom Major said Rod’s remarkable service is unprecedented.

“Rod has been Chief for 50 years and a volunteer for 67 years, there’s no one else that comes close to that level of experience,” he said.

“On behalf of Council and the Shire of Ravensthorpe I’d like to extend my gratitude to Rod for his tremendous contribution, we’re all going to miss his wisdom and leadership.”

An acting CBFCO will be appointed to sit in the role until the next Bush Fire Advisory Committee AGM in March 2025.

Recognition of service

Over his long career as CBFCO Rod has been recognised for his outstanding service in several ways.

Most recently he was named Senior Community Citizen of the Year at the 2024 Australia Day service in Hopetoun.

And in 1993 Rod was named an Honorary Freeman of the Shire.
